Can You Mig Weld Stainless Steel With Normal Mig Wire for Art

  1. MIG welding stainless steel

I've been trying to learn how to mig weld stainless steel. I'thou using the normal c25 mix. Here'southward a movie of my consequence. I'k using the stainless steel wire besides. I put the metal slice in the garden where it gets watered a lot and it does seem to be rust resistant. The problem is that the welds are non shiny. Non sure why but it makes the metal really dark colored. Anyone know how to make them look like shiny stainless steel?

C25 is not the gas recommended for SS and the finished weld isn't going to be shiny without mechanical or chemical cleaning. Nature of the animal.

  4. Re: MIG welding stainless steel

You're going to need a tri-mix gas (Ar, CO2, and He).

  5. Re: MIG welding stainless steel

Y'all go far shiny past using tri-mix gas NOT C25. Brush the weld when it's hot with a stainless brush or loving cup bike, or pickle it with acrid.

  6. Re: MIG welding stainless steel

Alter your shielding gas similar others have mentioned.

Smoothen upwardly your welds with a new stainless wire cycle and never ever apply that wheel on annihilation only stainless. If the wire wheel was used on carbon steel before yous could introduce components that volition rust to your otherwise rust resistant product.

Maybe not critical in your utilise but skilful do of to get into.

I remember doing some stainless and nickel alloys for a refinery that was processing some nasty Venezuela crude oil. We were supposed to have sheets of cardboard on the work bench before fifty-fifty setting parts down. Had to ensure that carbon grinding was non in direction of our stainless piping.

  7. Re: MIG welding stainless steel

They brand a flux cored for 304 stainless in a .035". If its annihilation like the 308 rods I've used, information technology volition exist shiny if y'all wait for the weld to cool before yous knock off the slag.

  8. Re: MIG welding stainless steel

Has anyone tried the the various types of shielding gas and can depict what happens with each? I'd like to know for sure before I purchase another canteen. I'm going to try pickling soon.

  9. Re: MIG welding stainless steel

short circuit or spray transfer ? How thick is the material ? there is a trade off between speed penetration, and bead appearance. the flux cored wire makes a fairly shiny dewdrop( I utilize the .035 bluish demon 308fco ) just you lot can get some really good results with 308 ac/dc welding rod. Information technology has a really good nearly mirror similar bead if you punch information technology in right. I do stainless tubing (4"- 304ss) with it. You lot really need to run into what your gas distributor has. There has been a lot of changes is the mixes for stainless mig . What kind of machine are you lot using ? brusque circuit isn't going to look as good as spray or pulsed. final finish is normally adamant by grinding sanding polishing,

  10. Re: MIG welding stainless steel

Shoot. I don't take that many answers. I'm using a 220 harbor freight MIG that uses gas, some blue demon StainlessSteel SS MIG wire from amazon, and I'grand welding on some stainless steel silverware from a garage auction. My dad has some welded art that he got from a craft fair that is SS silverware in the shape of a bug, and the welder used normal MIG (or perhaps stick) and the welds are rusted but the rest is stainless and silver colored. I just added some blueish demon flux cadre SS MIG wire to my amazon wish list. Do you think that stuff will pb to a nice silver colored weld? It costs 35 per pound, vs nearly 20 per two pounds for normal SS MIG wire. Not to bad if information technology save me buying another tank. Thanks.

  11. Re: MIG welding stainless steel

I practise silverware art as well. I observe if possible to weld only on the backside then you won't see the weld or the rut marks. I have even done plug welds when attaching 2 pieces or more. Layout of the pieces and deciding where to brand your cut makes a difference too. Sometimes I exit one piece longer to weld to to prevent the heat marks from showing. Using the thinner .024 wire helps too. Trimix will brand a cleaner weld and as stated , but utilize a dedicated wire wheel that is Stainless Steel.

Try 98% argon and 2% CO2 for mig.

If its non-structural, you could use silver solder. It has a strength of xvi,000 PSI. I've used it on 24ga. stainless sheet metal repair, where damages caused poor fit up. It works really well at low temps, less distortion and discoloring. Probably the cheapest alternative next to stick. Stainless tin get expensive fast, especially in mig, more for production.

Here'due south some pictures of 1/16" 308 rod run at 24 amps Ac on 18ga 304 stainless. We use information technology in the factory for the sheetmetal chutes, bins, blenders, conveyors, etc. Just lay a few extra chaplet on, and the sand and polish to desired cease. I used fine scotchbrite wheel to finish. It volition work AC or DC+. I have 3 different drawers for steel, aluminum , and stainless brushes, and wheels. My company uses Praxair to supply our gas, and they have a couple of different mixes, Stargon SS, is the ane I've used.In that location is e'er some cleaning involved. Wanted to try i of the other gases in the shop with solid wire, but haven't had fourth dimension.Name: 0625161022a.jpg Views: 1569 Size: 55.5 KB Name: 0625161023a.jpg Views: 1569 Size: 77.4 KB Name: 0625161043.jpg Views: 1566 Size: 38.6 KB Name: 0625161044.jpg Views: 1581 Size: 44.6 KB Name: 0625161044a.jpg Views: 1573 Size: 43.5 KB

In that location is some 309 ss wire that volition work with C25 and is shiny.

  17. Re: MIG welding stainless steel

That'southward dual shield. The OP is welding spoons with a Harbor Fright MIG.

    A few welders
    A lot of hammers
    A whole lot of C-clamps

  18. Re: MIG welding stainless steel

I've let my welded spoons sit in the garden for a calendar month or so, and goose egg is rusting. I'one thousand going to call that good enough without investing in more stuff.

From what I've read about dual shield welding, it isn't for hobbyists looking to spend only tens of dollars.

Pics I come across online frequently have shiny welds surrounded past discolored areas in the base metallic stock, so evidently it's not easy to get everything shiny.

I haven't tried the scotch brite abrasive wheels or discs, which I need to await into. Also SS wire wheels and blueish flap discs instead of red.

Finally, I read that you desire the shielding gas to protect non what you lot are welding as y'all become, but also the bead as it cools down. I hateful to try that with my crappy HF welder if I can. It doesn't have a timer like a TIG.

So, that's what I've learned to sum up for future readers who come up here from google or whatever looking for shiny stainless steel weld beads. Thank you everyone.

Yes, for sheet SS (and spoons, surely), and tri-mix for thicker SS.
